The best thing to bolster creativity is to surround yourself with creative friends. We fully believe this and implement it into our lives and sphere of friends. One such friend is actor/director/cinemotographer/Cassavetes-lover, Joey Sinko. You might know Joey from his hilariously heartwarming web series, “Not Now John,” a tale of an aspiring underdog actor looking for truth and beauty in a film industry riddled with fakes, phonies, and jerks. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll say, “what the hell?” Just do it.

Once you’re done with that though, check out his most recent piece of work, a music video for singer/songwriter/pro-skateboarder, Josh Harmony (below). It’s like you’re watching one of those old John Wayne, Gary Cooper or Errol Flynn black and white westerns. In other words it’s marvelous. Don’t miss Leo Romero as the nemesis.

We apologize in advance, but Amy Hood and I are now authors! Our first book is called How to Establish Your Small Design Business and a Powerful Lifestyle Brand. Yes, we know the title is long. I can explain. The title is from a talk we did at Creative South 2013 design conference. Initially, this book was not a book at all, just an attempt to write out a short rough script for the presentation of that title. But that short script fell into the hands of a long winded set of girls who like to talk, talk, talk and talk. Thus we ended up with about 25 pages of words. We realized quickly that no conference audience should be subjected to the torture of a dull read through, so we turned the script into an ebook and then reworked the ebook into a manageable outline of talking points for our actual presentation.

We will apologize for any typos… We will not apologize for the oxford commas, however. They’re awesome.

In our How To book for designers looking to become full time freelance, we chronicle all the nitty gritty nuts and bolts we’ve learned about starting and running a sexy and smart design business. When writing, we wanted to be sure that we didn’t speak in grand, obtuse ideals – we wanted to give concrete advice, real tips, and applicable directives for people to follow when starting a graphic design business. In this ebook, which we both wrote and designed, we explain from our personal experience of starting a design business, how to be a full time freelancer. We cover the stuff they never told you in college about working for yourself: how to start a design business as far as registering and documenting it with the correct government agencies both locally and federally, how to pay your taxes, how to write up design contracts and figure out your billable design rate, how to work out a job structure, how to always get paid, and more. We recommend daily software and free apps we use to stay organized. Besides the business side of getting and managing clients and jobs, we’ve also shared how we built a lifestyle brand for our company and how other designers can too. Lifestyle branding takes your amazing traditional branding to the next level by integrating it into custom content that reveals the personality of the people behind your brand. Lifestyle branding reveals the ethos, dedication and personality behind your business.

Real tips, real tricks, real references, real examples. We think it’s a real cool book. But let us know what you think. How the Hoods Spent Creative South: A Recap and Infographic Services The Hoodlums Behind Hoodzpah

So we had a blast at Creative South 2013. It was our first design conference – to speak at or attend – and it was a perfect first! The city was beautiful and loaded with amazing old architecture; The people were all friendly and accommodating; The weather was nice and warm and not too muggy; And the food was greasy and delicious – just the way we like it. The conference audience was a cozy 170-200 people from every side of the continent, all eager to listen and learn. And the speakers!

Unfortunately we weren’t able to catch everybody since there were three speakers on at any given time, but we hear the videos of everyone will be up soon. Master letter-ers, Ryan Hamrick and Sean McCabe were on hand; the absolutely hilarious trio behind Weir / Stewart were there to talk business and basics (squizz – [inside joke, you had to be there {we're those guys}]); Illustrator extraordinaire, Nick Slater made us all hate him for his amazing job. Rogie King introduced us to Derpy Belle. Nicest guys ever, Josh Long and Mat Helme from Treehouse both showed up. Masterminds behind GoMedia and Weapons of Mass Creation, Jeff Finley and Bill Beachy got everyone thinking, questioning, and inspired. New York’s finest, Jessica Heltzel and Tim Hoover talked about their awesome project Kern & Burn. The boys at Mama’s Sauce, aka the most popular screen printers in America (which spurred a new drinking game: every time someone name drops Mama’s Sauce in their panel you have to take a drink), gave us a screen printing demo. Michael Butler educated us yahoos on social media and marketing. Former NASA designer, Eric Mortensen shared his story about having one of the cool-est jobs ever. Mackey Saturday and his lovely wife Trish won us over with their smiles and amazing positivity, causing us to deem them Creative South’s first couple. James White of Signalnoise solidified his rightful title as “Biggest Nerd in the World” and blew the proverbial socks off the conference with his amazing presentation. And last but not least, Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. made us laugh, cry, and learn with him.

We met so many amazing people and left with so many new ideas and we can’t even WAIT for Creative South 2014.

America heaved a collective sigh of despair (or cry of ecstasy depending on what side you’re on) when Kobe fell down in pain vs the Warriors with grabbing his foot. A sigh turned to wailing and gnashing of teeth when we found out he had a season (and possibly even career?) ending torn Achilles.

While we were crying, the rest of the Lakers were planning a way to keep the playoff dreams alive. None more than Steve Blake. Of the two Steve’s this is the one we’re actually counting on to help us get past the Spurs in round one. So in honor of “White-y” (aka Steve) we cooked up another Do Good Voodoo card to wish him well at tonight’s game! Like it, share it, spread the love! Gotta get a win in before our backs are against the wall!
