Our quarterly guide for Locale Magazine has been on Orange County stands for almost a month now! This season’s assignment? To give Locale Magazine readers an ultimate guide to the Greater Palm Springs area. It was the playground of the who’s who playboys and girls of old Hollywood and today it is still OC and LA’s favorite sun-drenched getaway. For a week we forsake our beaches and sea breezes for chlorinated, crystal blue pools and cacti speckled desert horizons. Something about the desert is fantastical and other-worldly, the perfect unearthly escape from everyday “reality bites” kind of woes. Amy and I did a trip to Palm Springs, swept Joshua Tree, made a pit stop in Pioneertown and lived to tell the tale. All our picks and findings are in the pages below, including guides to doing Palm Springs “Mad Men” style, where to buy vintage, where to see the best underground live show, how to go off the map, and where to have your “close encounter” with whatever is out there in that great blue yonder. It is 100% designed and written by the Hoods. Enjoy. Open publication – Free publishing – More ace hotel

Client: Group Publishing Project: Pure Sex Cover Art Description: A lot of our work comes from big companies who get overwhelmed with projects and have to hire out to wrap things up on time. This is good for us and for them: for us because we get to work with some great companies with great design teams, and for them because they meet their deadlines without having to lose too much sleep. Our friend Riley Hall recently called us on behalf of Group Publishing and Simply Youth Ministry to work up a few book and DVD covers for them, one of which was Pure Sex. Pure Sex is a Christian DVD study series for teens, so they wanted something that was eye catching and fresh, but not too fresh, if you know what I’m saying. We worked up a slew of different ideas and after presenting them to Group Publishing Art Director, Veronica Preston, we decided on a cover based on the old “birds and the bees” phrase. First we created vector illustrations of various birds and bees. We were going for a botonist style illustration that was detailed, but a little bit gritty. Then we worked on some various fonts [...]

Prepare to witness the fine specimens of London outfit Nobrow, an “an independent publishing platform for illustration and the graphic arts.” The way they works is this: • Firstly, Nobrow hunts down artistic talent like Predator on Arnold Schwarzenegger (before the ingenious mud incident). • Secondly, the artist and Nobrow combine forces like a paint-toting, printmaking version of Captain Planet’s crack squad. • Thirdly, they print it and peddle the finished limited edition, hand printed books and posters to yearning, unique, artsy consumers like you or I. The artists they collaborate with are all sheer fun, madness, and genius, making for books that are visual va-va-voom and boom and pow! Seriously, this stuff is amazing. One of my favorite books from Nobrow is this book by Joe Crocker. No, not the guy who sings the best version of everyone else’s songs. Joe Crocker with two “r”s. The 20-something, English bloque who’s the potential lost nephew of the baking Betty. Joe Crocker’s book Vendoin is delightfully visceral, confusing (it’s written in Crocker’s own, unique language), and playful. The plot? Hard to tell. Well Nobrow describes the book thusly: Joseph Crocker’s first Small Press book Vendoin, is a tale of a missing stiletto and its [...]

Here’s a tall glass of water: Michael Pitt, the slicked back looker with the killer pout in Boardwalk Empire. He’s one of the latest faces for Prada, graciously donning the brand’s amazing ’50s inspired spring line in a series of dapper ads shot by David Sims. The campaign is ridiculously enchanting, with Pitt playing guitar, shadow boxing, and nursing a toothpick dressed in retro prints, jackets and button ups worthy of Elvis’s former closet (before the bell bottoms and cape). From a person constantly looking for design and style inspiration, this campaign totally hits all the right notes. It’s nostalgic without being kitschy, reminiscent without being costumey, classic and fresh and retro all at once. The thesis behind the ad campaign? According to Prada, it “explores the language of male rolemodels from the rock star to the playboy, from the self-reflective introvert to the engaging and humorous farceur.” Prada recently released a behind the scenes video of the shoot, which you can check out below. It’s pure joy.

Client: The Seeworthy Project Project: Web Icons Description: We have a serious case of job envy when it comes to producer/head honcho, Chris Steblay, over at the Seeworthy Project. He films exciting things in far of places with some of the most interesting people around, and he gets paid to do it! Which is why whenever we are asked to help them out with a project, we jump at another chance to live vicariously through their adventurous lives. The most recent project was a couple of fun web icons for the brand new Seeworthy Project website. Chris wanted to add a few more graphic elements to the site that matched the logo we designed for him last year. In keeping with his sea-faring theme, he had us draw up some rum bottles and a port window. So we got the old pen and paper out and started doodling. We scanned in the final ideas and cleaned them up in Adobe Illustrator and above is how they turned out. See them live in action by visiting the Seeworthy website. Don’t forget to check out their 2012 Project Reel while you’re there. It’ll have you wishing you were a part of the Seeworthy [...]

Detail of Godspeed print. ©Godspeed 45/06 This past week was like Hanukkah at Hoodzpah – a week straight of gifting. Not soon after posting about the amazing new books we were sent by Adam Wright, the doorbell rings and another package arrives from a mutual friend of ours and Adam’s: Cicero deGuzman Jr. (whose work was actually featured in Adam’s contributor photo book). After posting a picture of my place, which included a giant framed print of Danny Lyon’s “Crossing The Ohio River”, Cicero dropped me a line to let me know that my apartment was missing one key element, a Godspeed print. To which I heartily agreed, having been a huge fan of his quarterly photo mags, Godspeed 45/06. As soon as I got the package I carefully tore it open (like that scene from A Christmas Story when Ralphie’s dad gets his prized leg lamp in the mail). I headed straight to get it framed and hung it proudly above my Hoodzpah office desk (photo proof below). Cicero is a NYC based photographer and designer who documents the custom chopper culture in all of its glory, from the lens of one of it’s own. Which is probably the reason his work [...]

The author behind the pipe and beret finally has a logo worthy of his stately yet mischievous persona and the fantastic historical fiction he’s becoming known for. He and his wife are both talented writers of the historical fiction, steam punk, and sometimes the sci-fi and horror genres. They are publishing a series of their latest books (which I did some of the covers for, you can see the post here) and wanted me to create a logo for each of them to be used when promoting the new books. Originally, Dharma’s idea was to have an artist’s profile caricature reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous logo. But as we hashed out some concepts and mockups, we started leaning away from the literal portrayal of Dharma – a tall, well dressed writer well known for his beret and pipe – and focused more on just those quintessential pieces of his style and trade. We isolated his pipe and introduced his favorite quill pen (he only writes with fine pens) into the logo concept. We created a classic shield setup with the pieces and added in a book to seal the picture of him as a novelist. For the text of [...]
